Bush pushes for FTA's citing national security

President Bush appeals to national security in an intensified push to get Congress to pass four Free Trade Agreements (Peru, Panama, Colombia and Korea). The Congress Daily for July 18, 2007 reports, "In an echo of rhetoric rarely heard since the end of the Cold War, the administration plans to increasingly point to trade as a weapon to block the influence of regimes that seek to promote socialist ideas in Latin America."

Erminia Osorio-Perez of Achuapa, Nicaragua grows corn to feed her family, selecting and saving her own seeds. Today's Reason to reject Fast Track

  • Big agri-business subsidies have destroyed small family farm production in the United States and driven over 2 million Mexican corn farmers off their lands as a result of the inflow of subsidized U.S. corn. Additionally, irreplaceable varieties of Indigenous corn are being lost due to the indiscriminate introduction of GMO corn in the Mexican countryside.
